to talk about things which happen or exist all the time, not just at the moment of speaking • He always comes late to schol. • I never go to the mountains alone.
For repeated actions • The postman always delivers the letters at 8.00 PM.
For general truths, facts and states • Our bodies contain 5 litres of blood.
For timetables, schedules and programms, often made by someone else, not the speaker • Lunch is at 1.00 PM
For present actions in commentaries or stories • The horse Starlight is in the lead. • Ronaldo passes the ball, he shoots. | |

| Present continuous (progressive) tense
For incomplete actions at the moment of speaking • I´m talking in the phone, wait a moment please.
For temporary situations at the moment • My husband is working late hours this week.
For changes taking place at the moment • It´s getting colder.
For future arrangements • I´m meeting my friend at 6.00 PM.

For short, completed actions in the past • We left at 6.00 pm.
For telling stories in which one thing happened after another • She said goodbye, opened the door and left the house.
For completed situations in the past • My grandparents lived in Corfu for many years. (Ale už sa odsťahovali.) | |

| Past continuous (progressive) tense
For temporary continuing situations in the past • He was standing next to the window.
For past events that were in progress at certain time in the past • What were you doing yesterday at 8.00 pm?
For two past actions that were happening at the same time in the past • My mum was making dinner and my dad was reading newspaper.
For background information about the weather/about what people were doing or wearing (descriptions in telling stories) • The children were all wearing new clothes.
For an action in the past that was interrupted by another • I was having a shower when the telephone rang.

For recently completed actions • I´ve finished my homework. • He´s just washed the car.
For actions or situations (in definite time) in the past which are important now • He has painted many wonderful pictures.
For actions or situations which started in the past and continue up to the present • They have walked to school every day for two years.
• He has lived in this town since 1980.
For expressing unique experiences • Have you ever visited Australia? • He has never been in a plane.
With the superlative • This is the best holiday I´ve ever had.
